Pregnancy Skincare for Sensitive Skin

When I got pregnant, I was so excited to have ten months of glowing, gorgeous skin. All my life, I’d heard that pregnant women don’t get acne. As my hormones started changing, I was devastated to find that was not the case for me. Just before I got pregnant, I’d finally cleared up my skin, and now here I was having to start all over again.

If you’re struggling like I was (even if you’re not pregnant), here’s what helped me regain and maintain good skin while I was pregnant.

  1. Facial Cleanser

I’m super allergic to grapefruit extract, which is in a TON of skin care products, and my skin is sensitive to a lot of things (like salicylic acid, mangoes, etc.), so I went to my dermatologist to get a really gentle face wash.

Aquanil is a fat-free soapless cleanser that is so gentle and leaves my face feeling fresh. It’s soapless, so it feels kind of watery and not quite right until you wash it off, but it leaves you grease-less and refreshed.

   2. Moisturizer

Aquanil has a great moisturizer as well, but I prefer the Superfood Air-Whip Moisture Cream by Youth to the People. It’s pregnancy-safe and so hydrating that a little bit on your finger is all you need. It comes in a tiny container but I’ve had it for over ten months and I’m not even finished with it yet!

Both of these were really all that I needed. The facial cleanser is so gentle and effective, and the moisturizer does an amazing job and is so vital to my skin routine, especially in this dry Utah air. Having such a simple routine was great for my low energy during pregnancy, and even better for my lower energy after my baby was born!

Sometimes you need a little pampering though. Here are a few of my favorite fun skin care add-ons.

   3. Face Masks

Now, I didn’t feel like reading through every ingredient list (for more than grapefruit extract), so I just avoided face masks during my pregnancy and stuck to my face wash and moisturizer. But I love face masks and as soon as I had my daughter I was right back on them.

My absolute favorite face masks are Sugar Kitten and Space Kitten by I Dew Care. They’re peel-off masks, so they’re perfect for when I want something fun and low-maintenance that I can just peel off and go straight to bed without washing my face.

I also love the Ultra Violet Brightening Purple Clay Mask, GlamGlow Supermud Clearing Treatment, and any of the Freeman Facial Masks.

   4. Rose Water

Rose water is so refreshing and hydrates your face without making it greasy. It’s great for the middle of the day when you aren’t really in the right time or place to wash your face or moisturize. I love Mario Badescu's rose water. It’s hydrating and smells really good.

   5. Witch Hazel

Witch hazel works like rose water for me, with the added bonus of helping clear your skin. Mario Badescu makes a really great Witch Hazel Toner.

Not everyone has perfect skin while they're pregnant, and if you're like me, you might find yourself with more pimples than skin.

The best advice I have is to go back to the basics of washing with a gentle cleanser and moisturizing.

Using gentle things on your skin is especially good when you're pregnant and your hormones are messing everything up. With consistency, my face eventually cleared up and stayed clear and so can yours!
